VISUAL THINKING WORKSHOP

During my research internship at ZLabs (Research Wing),ZOHO, Chennai, I had the opportunity to bridge my academic learning from Manchester Metropolitan University with real-world challenges in a tech-driven environment. Working with the Research Wing of 30+ software developers (with 2–10 years of experience), I explored how design thinking could add value in a company known primarily for its engineering expertise.

  • 30+ experienced software developers from Zoho’s Research Team

  • Professionals spread across different product lines within the company

  • A dynamic group with 2–10 years of domain experience

Format

  • Hand-on sessions with a mix of team activities and friendly competitions

  • Interactive games & points system to keep learning fun and engaging

  • Blend of theory & practice - moving from conceptual ideas to applied exercises

  • Introduced mind-mapping frameworks for structuring complex ideas visually.

  • Practical challenge: redesigning internal communication emails using visual thinking → simplifying how teams collaborate.

  • By the end, participants had tools to make problem-solving more engaging and efficient in their day-to-day work.

  • Learned to translate abstract ideas into clear visuals quickly.

  • Discovered the power of storytelling to simplify complexity.

  • Experienced collaborative design thinking through games and team exercises.

  • Gained practical tools to apply visual communication in everyday workflows.

Workshop Highlights

Key Takeaway for the Participants

  • Kicked off with Steal Like an Artist—understanding that originality often comes from remixing ideas.

  • Introduced visual storytelling exercises to translate abstract concepts into simple visuals.

  • Guided participants in designing 75+ unique icons in just 2 hours → boosting speed in idea communication.

  • Competitive challenges added fun, energy, and sharper focus.

This workshop was more than just a teaching exercise—it was a barter of learning. While I demonstrated how design plays a crucial role in enhancing research and communication, I also discovered how deeply my skills as a designer were valued in a tech-driven space. Watching seasoned developers embrace visual thinking and infuse creativity into their workflows was truly rewarding.

This experience reinforced my belief that design is not just about objects or spaces—it’s about shaping the way people think, collaborate, and solve problems together.
